KTL is always hiring!

Well-trained, friendly, and enthusiastic music teachers are a big reason why KTL is a top Portland music school. We offer enjoyable and meaningful part-time contractor work, a network of dedicated teachers, support from the KTL Director, and the chance to perform at school functions on a regular basis.

KTL is also happy to provide the following extras to the usual hourly pay:

  • Paid training/job shadow 

  • Pay for recitals, faculty meetings, faculty band rehearsals, and last-minute cancellations.

 

Prerequisites for All Prospective Teachers:

  • Proficiency with instrument. All candidates perform during the interview

  • Previous teaching experience

  • Ability to read music

  • Communicate and present oneself professionally

  • Pass background check, fingerprinting and enrollment in Oregon Criminal Registry

 

Preferred Additional Skill Sets for All Teachers:

  • Sing with confidence

  • Know and use Solfege (Do Re Mi)

  • Go beyond method books and engage student creativity

  • Have experience with or on-going personal practice of a somatic discipline. Examples include yoga, the Alexander technique, and the Feldenkrais method.

Compensation depends on experience, expertise, and credentials.

 Specifics

Guitar Instructor:
Private and group lessons. East and West Side locations. All levels. Acoustic and electric. Genres: rock, blues; some jazz and classical fingerstyle. Be able to read standard notation, tab, chord charts, and sing while playing. Able to figure out melodies by ear. Personable, patient, and passionate.

Piano/Voice Instructor:
Private and group lessons. East and West Side locations. Students are Young Beginner to Advanced. Primarily classical foundation; all genres. Proficient in reading notation, sight-reading, proper technique, scales/arpeggios et al, strong theory background and, ideally, knowledge of Solfege. Able to sing and play; play by ear. Personable, patient, and passionate.

Voice Instructor:
Private lessons. East and West Side locations. All levels. Classical, pop, broadway, liturgical; comfort in any/all genres. Able to read music, lead warm-ups, know fixed Do and moveable Do Solfege, theory, and sight-sing. Able to explain mechanics of singing including breathing and diaphragmatic vibrato. Ability to play piano at least for warm-ups and melodies a must. Able to figure out melodies by ear. Personable, patient, and passionate.

Strings Instructor:
Private and group lessons. East and West Side locations. All levels. Genres beyond Classical. Be able to read standard notation. Able to figure out melodies by ear. Personable, patient, and passionate.

Drum Instructor:
Private lessons. East and West Side locations. Beginner through Advanced levels. Genres beyond rock. Be able to read and teach standard notation in addition to learning by ear. Teach stick technique and rudiments. Act as coach for student band performances. Personable, patient, and passionate.
