The Piano: The Gateway to Understanding Music
The Piano is one of the most popular instruments heard throughout all genres of music and is one of the most popular for private lessons. It is the gateway to understanding music. It is 88 keys of possibility: it’s used for composing music, as a solo instrument in jazz and in concertos, for accompanying, and much more. When you think of great pianists, classical greats like Vladamir Horowitz and Glenn Gould come to mind; Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, and Herbie Hancock for jazz; and pop stars like Billy Joel and Alicia Keys and Fiona Apple remind us how truly versatile the piano is.
Those who play the piano fall in love with it and their lives are forever enriched.
Most Comprehensive Piano Program in Portland
In the beginning, our approach may seem like most others: we introduce students to the piano and standard music notation with a particular method book. The lesson books are accompanied by theory books and supplemental activity sheets that strengthen the students understanding of the fundamentals of music.
Things move beyond the usual during the lessons. We not only emphasize counting and rhythm, proper technique, but more importantly ear training, creativity, improvisation and music appreciation.
We’ve learned from experience that when a student explores their instrument on their own terms they build their connection to it much more deeply than just through notated repertoire.
The motivation to play and practice comes more and more from within and an artist is born.
For this reason we include additional repertoire pertaining to the student’s interest, time for supported jamming, figuring out songs by ear, or performance of an original song by the student. At the end of each school year, we discuss the student’s progress over the year and set new goals.
