Portland Guitar Lessons
The Guitar: Portable Passion
Names like Segovia, Hendrix, Clapton, and B.B. King inspire and delight lovers of the instrument. It is the most popular instrument for the budding rockstar (or pop, jazz, or folk star for that matter). The is a vast variety in types of guitars and Portland is likely the best place to find all the weirdest ones plus the usual acoustic, electric, or bass. The guitar allows individuals to find their perfect match so they can unleash their creativity. The guitar brings people together and brings happiness to those who take the time to study it.
Guitar Lessons with KTL
Guitars lend themselves to innovation. This is partly due to the various cultures that use the instrument and partly because the guitar has an above average palette of possibility for sound production.
At Keys to Life, students of the guitar begin their study with tuning, an introduction to the parts of the instrument, and reading music with standard notation and tablature (tab), a form of notation specific to the guitar that shows where the notes are played on the instrument itself. A sense of exploration is instilled right away by experimenting with the sounds one can make on the guitar.
For those students with more of a rock/blues/folk preference, we generally use the Hal Leonard series of method books. For those of the classical persuasion, we use Frederick Noad’s Solo Guitar Playing book and for those seeking knowledge of jazz we addtionally look to the Hal Leonard’s Real Book. All students learn chords and chord symbols, strumming, fingerstyle, scales and technique, and everyone learns how to sing and play (even if that requires tricking the reluctant by calling singing “ear-training”).
Students also move beyond tablature to read standard music notation and are given opportunities to sightread music, a very valuable skill! Everyone is encouraged to compose and we make time to jam together. At the end of each school year, we discuss the student’s progress over the year and set new goals.
