Piano Forever Program
The Piano Forever Program* consists of three levels of education, achievement, and fun! The 50-minute classes are aimed at beginning students, ages 5-8, and consist of exactly three students. Each student has their own piano to play in class.
For the first two levels all the binders, music, and practice trackers are furnished by KTL! Piano Forever is designed to be an economical yet scholastically superior entry into music lessons setting the foundation for a life of self-motivated music-making.
Students begin with “Funky P’s.” This preparatory course focuses on using the boogie woogie blues to teach young children all the note names of the piano, finger numbers, and how to play with both hands at the same time while reading simple, non-staff notation. The boogie woogie is an infectious and recognizable sound that children actually want to practice (this is based on the KTL founder’s experience as a child). In class there is quality time for singing, Solfege, rhythm development, and Pentascales and the teacher uses prizes and stickers to motivate. Classmates are sure to bounce their fingers to the funky beat while solidifying their understanding of keyboard basics.
After graduating from Funky P’s, the students progress to “I Can Read!” Here the students acquire an understanding of the treble and bass clef staff through fun and challenging games and songs. Students learn how to read simple, original songs on the staff in addition to other familiar songs (and we take requests). Like every course at KTL, singing and Fixed-do Solfege are emphasized to strengthen the ear. By the end of the course, students can confidently read and play scales, chords, and songs as well as sing and play solo or in a group. We encourage group performance at the formal recitals but it is not mandatory at any level in Piano Forever.
Students progress towards greater autonomy and further application of their reading, theory, and singing work in the final level “Choose Your Own Adventure.” In this level, classes continue on by studying music in their favorite genre (we use the popular Faber series for this). They also work in theory work books, practice personal side-project music, and learn popular duets like “Heart and Soul” by ear. Again, we encourage some form of group or solo performance at the formal recitals.
After students have completed the Piano Forever program, they enter into private lessons with greater ease, enjoyment, and self-motivation.
